Abstract

This review aims to analyze the obstacles and challenges that have arisen in different countries when attempting to implement the electronic health record (EHR) on a national scale. The electronic health record is a digital system that allows patients' medical information to be recorded, stored and accessed electronically, instead of in paper format. Its nationwide implementation has been proposed as a way to improve the quality and efficiency of health care, facilitate data interoperability between different health care institutions, and reduce costs. Analysis of multiple studies and reviews has revealed that several challenging factors are hindering the adoption and expansion of EHR nationwide. The search strategy identified 170 results from which 25 articles were selected. As a result of this research, 5 factors that may affect the implementation of a central repository of electronic medical records were identified. In addition, it is necessary to carry out the central implementation at the national level since the benefits improve the quality of care provided to the patient by the different health services.
