The robotic epitome for surgical teaching is a significant educational innovation, especially in regions with limited access to advanced technology. The project sought to design and build a functional and economical robot to perform basic surgical activities, reinforcing theoretical and practical concepts for medical students. In countries like Peru, surgery robots are limited due to high costs and lack of adequate training. For this reason, an accessible robot was developed that allows the simulation of surgical procedures.
Using low-cost components, such as servomotors and an Arduino Nano board, and a 3D-printed structure, a robot was created capable of cutting suture threads under voice commands. Although speech recognition was affected by hospital environmental sound, this issue was mitigated by testing in silent places.
The robot had a final cost of $130, turned out to be useful for teaching surgical robotics. This project shows that it is possible to develop effective and economical educational tools, relevant for institutions in developing countries. The robotic epitome opens doors to future improvements and research, enhancing medical education and the integration of advanced technologies in regions with limited resources.
