Level of dependence in the elderly with disability in Peru

Abstract

The object of the study was to characterize the level of dependence of the elderly with disabilities in Peru and determine if there is a differentiation in the level of dependency according to socio-economic characteristics. The study was analytic based on the National Survey on Disability Specialist - 2012, nationwide. The main results show that in the year 2012, 34,5% of the Peruvian population had some kind of disability, the most common being motor disability (3.0%). Among older adults, the most common types of disabilities are the driving (22,4%) and visual (21.2%). 38.7% of the elderly with disability, have some kind of dependence. Women have 20% more probability of developing dependence, and there is a direct relationship between age and dependence, as well as an inverse relationship between dependence and educational level. Research has shown that elderly adults, not only face the problems of age, but the condition of being a woman, a low level of education, live in rural areas, make old age is the greatest risk.
