The study aimed to establish the effectiveness of the hydroalcoholic extract in vitro on strains of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175 and P. gingivalis ATCC 33277, and the in vivo efficacy of a mouthwash base to extract. The in vitro results showed the formation of inhibition zone versus the strains mentioned with diameters between 13-17 mm for S. mutans and 7-8 mm in diameter for P. gingivalis, in concentrations of 10 %, 20 %, 50 % and 100%, with increased effectiveness in direct relation to the concentration of the extract. The effectiveness of the mouthwash applied in 10 subjects was evident in the reduction of the microbial flora present in saliva for 10 minutes, noticing that recovery of microorganism after 30 minutes, both the total count of microorganisms in Trypticase Soy Agar , and of S. mutans in the Mitis salivarius bacitracin Agar. Only significant differences in the case of S. mutans counts. It is concluded that evidence of Myrciaria dubia antimicrobial effect in vitro and in vivo.Downloads
