Abstract

The aim of this research was to establish the profile of the oral language of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), compared with children with typical neurodevelopment. The study had a non-experimental, descriptive and transeccional design, whereas the selection of subjects was made for convenience, using inclusion-exclusion criteria. The data collection was performed with several instruments which explored the lexical, semantic, syntactic and pragmatic components of language. The results showed significantly better performance in children with typical neurodevelopment, regarding children with ASD, in fourteen of the seventeen explored aspects of language. No significant differences in the understanding of oral narratives between six and twelve were found, nor in expressive vocabulary and verbal analysis-synthesis at the age of five.
