Todas las ciencias sociales hacen “camino al andar” cuando buscan ampliar sus posibilidades de avance, pero la antropología, por la naturaleza de su objeto de estudio, le viene dando a ese empeño un especial cuidado. La antropología pretende, desde hace tres décadas, circunscribirse sólo a los aspectos socioculturales de la condición humana, desprendiéndose de aquellos con los que emprendió, a mediados del siglo XIX, la búsqueda de su institucionalización académica: los aspectos biológicos. Sin embargo, ni este silencioso intento por restringir su objeto de estudio lo puede liberar de la necesidad de seguir haciendo más “camino al andar”. Es que es así cómo también viene creando las condiciones para asumir el mayor reto que actualmente tiene: integrar en un solo proceso los quehaceres explicativo (científico) e interpretativo (hermenéutico, comprensivo), evitando que el desborde de sus autonomías puedan constituirse en una traba.
