Abstract

The paper is a state of the art on the concepts of centrality and urban polycentrality. It analyzes the construction of concepts and their different approaches in contemporary urban geography and raises the debate about the process of recomposition of centrality in the great metrópolis in the world and in Latin America, from economic geography, studies of daily mobility and of the ways of life and transformation of urban sociability. It presents the challenges when planning urban centralities from some examples in European cities with a tradition in urban planning.
