Abstract

Carlos Granados Chaverri is a Costa Rican geographer, currently retired, who worked as a teacher and researcher at the Department of Geography of the University of Costa Rica (UCR) for more than thirty years. Professor Granados obtained his Bachelor’s degree at the UCR (1974-1979), Master´s degree at the University of Oregon (1980-1982) and Ph.D at Syracuse University, USA (1989-1993), all in the area of geography. His academic work has been focused on the field of political geography, from where he has made significant contributions on issues such as geopolitics, nationalisms, state formation, frontiers, territorial identities, and electoral geography, with emphasis on Costa Rica and Central America. In this interview, Professor Granados refers to the development and evolution of geographic science, in Costa Rica and the world, as well as some of the ideas that he has developed in his academic career. In particular, he refers to the place of Central America and the Caribbean in world geopolitics, as well as the role of geography in the construction of nationalism in Costa Rica.
