Abstract

This paper present community management of water as an alternative strategy to face the threat of mining exploitation from the case study of the community water system Tarqui-Victoria del Portete in Azuay, Ecuador. Local inhabitants, attached to the community system, in the reproduction of their daily lives, have generated collective forms of social organization that resist and confront the Loma Larga Gold Project. From the institution of the community water system, they promote collective economic and social organization as an alternative for the reproduction of life, preserve community management and the defense of water and nature, and at the same time confront the mining activity.
