Abstract

The aim of this study was to know the opinion of citizens about castration as a preventive practice of hormone-dependent reproductive diseases and population control. A questionnaire was developed through a Google form and distributed online to residents of the city of La Plata, Argentina, owning at least one pet. The questionnaire included multiple choice and dichotomous questions. A high percentage of respondents were found to have neutered their pets and a low percentage to have administered contraceptives to them. Respondents considered it important to neuter both males and females. The results show that society has been acquiring knowledge about the care of its pets and the importance of castration. The present work indicates the importance of informing owners about the advantage of castration and its impact on the prevention of reproductive diseases, thus improving the quality of life of pets.
