Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine serum cholinesterase, transaminases and bilirubin concentrations in cattle exposed to organophosphates from a farm located in the municipality of Chocontá, Cundinamarca, Colombia. Eighty cows were sampled, with an average age of 7 years, bathed 4 months previously with Alliance product. In addition, they were dewormed 7.5 months in advance. The biomarkers were shown to be above the biological reference interval. Thus, cholinesterase in 93.8% of the cattle, alanine transaminase (76.3%), aspartate aminotransferase (71.3%), total bilirubin (91.3%) and direct bilirubin (66.3%). The variables with a strong positive correlation were transaminases and the age of the cattle at the time of the last deworming, while cholinesterase had a weak negative correlation with ALT, AST, direct bilirubin and total bilirubin. The results indicated that a large part of cattle suffer from organophosphate poisoning.
