Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary replacement of corn with broken rice on fattening performance, carcass components and skin colour in creole chickens. A total of 80 male chickens of 70 days of age were fattened for 42 days with feed containing 0, 15, 30, 45 or 60% broken rice, replacing corn in the same amounts. Chickens fed a diet containing 60% broken rice had a lower average daily feed intake and a better feed conversion ratio than those in the other groups (p<0.05). Abdominal fat production in the groups with broken rice was higher with 30% than that of the other groups (p<0.05). The weights of carcass, thighs + legs + feet, breast, backbone and gizzard did not differ between groups (p>0.05). The 0, 15 and 30% broken rice groups had a higher yellowing of the skin than the 45 and 60% broken rice groups (p<0.05). In conclusion, broken rice improves feed efficiency in fattening but increases abdominal fat production and decreases the yellowing of the skin of Creole chickens.
