Submission of articles to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina

Anales de la Facultad de Medicina does not require anyone to pay for the right of evaluation or publication for authors of articles..

Articles submitted to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina must be unpublished, either totally or partially. Articles should not be submitted simultaneously for publication in another journal. Articles submitted to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina can be written in Spanish, English or Portuguese, according to origin and preference of the authors. Submissions will be made electronically to:  anales.medicina@unmsm.edu.pe

Affidavit of authorship and permission for publication of the scientific article including the respective signature of all authors recording their institutional affiliation, profession and higher academic degree, e-mail, telephone and the specific contribution in the elaboration of the article. Policies of Anales de la Facultad de Medicina, including those related to conflict of interest, ethical aspects and misrepresentation of data and documents, apply to all submitted articles. The documentation is required to start the publishing process, or the article will be returned to the author. If the article was submitted previously to another journal, the authors must provide a copy of the detailed comments of the peer-review. Initially, the submitted articles are evaluated by the Editorial Committee of Anales de la Facultad de Medicina. Some articles will be rejected immediately if they do not meet the stipulated requirements; all articles are subject to review by peers.

Ethical aspects in the editorial process of Anales de la Facultad de Medicina

Prior to the submission of articles to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina authors are encouraged to consider as set forth by the International Committee of Ethics in Scientific Publications, whose recommendations are found in the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors, recommendations followed by the Editorial Committee of Anales de la Facultad de Medicina. This information is available at: http://publicationethics.org Through these guidelines, Anales de la Facultad de Medicina considers as ethical misdemeanors plagiarism, fictitious authorship, changes of authorship, redundant publication, data manipulation, undisclosed conflict of interest. In case of detection of any ethical publication misdemeanor, Anales de la Facultad de Medicina will reject the article and take the measures recommended by the International Committee of Ethics on Scientific Publications which includes information of the misdemeanor to the author, other authors, to the institution where he belongs, to his superiors, to the source of the funding entity, to the Ethics Committee of the institution, to other scientific journals and authorities.

Experimentation in humans and animals

Articles describing experiments carried out in humans should indicate whether the procedures followed were according to the ethical rules of the institutional or regional Ethics Committee and the Declaration of Helsinki (World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki: recommendations guiding physicians in biomedical research involving human subjects. JAMA. 1997; 277:925-6).

In Peru, the rules to follow for experimentation on humans are laid down in the Regulation of Clinical Trials. The National Institute of Health of Peru is the authority responsible at the national level to ensure compliance with that regulation and the related rules governing the authorization and execution of clinical trials. The authors of clinical trials in humans require approval by the National Institute of Health of Peru before starting the experiment. At the request of Anales de la Facultad de Medicina, the author must deliver copies of documentation evidencing authorization.

For animal experimentation the authors will take into consideration international standards for use of animals for experimentation, in particular those recommended by the Office of Animal Care and Use of the National Institutes of Health (http://oacu.od.nih.gov/index.htm), as well as the guidelines of the institution or national law governing the care and use of laboratory animals. The animals used must be named in the title, abstract, keywords and materials and methods. Such experimentation should be thoroughly detailed in the materials and methods section. Animal experimental research carried out in Peru, must have the approval of the Committee of Ethics and Animal Welfare at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos: http://veterinaria.unmsm.edu.pe/CEBA.htm.

Patients’ names, initials, number of clinical history, or general data enabling identification of study subjects should not be mentioned. Images of patients in the publication of original articles or case reports must have the permission and informed written consent. The recognizable characteristics of photographs of identifiable people must be masked. Studies on patients, records of patients or volunteers require the approval of the institutional Ethics Committee as well as informed consent.

Guidelines for development and presentation of research

For the submission of articles to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina authors are recommended to follow the guidelines established internationally for the design, realization and presentation of different types of studies:

Authors and contributors of articles submitted to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina

The authors of papers presented to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina must submit the affidavit of authorship. This requirement applies to all types of article including editorials and letters to the Editor. Ethical considerations about the authorship and collaboration should be adjusted according to the provisions of the uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals of the International Committee of Editors of Medical Journals (http://www.icmje.org/urm_full.pdf).

The recognition of authorship should be based on: 1) Contributions to the idea and study design, data collection, or to the analysis and interpretation of data; 2) The drafting of the article or revising it critically for intellectual content; and 3) Final approval of the version to be published. Authors should meet conditions 1, 2, and 3. The search for funding, data collection, or supervision of the research group doesnot justify authorship. All persons listed as authors should meet the criteria for authorship, and all those who meet them should appear in the list of authors. All contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should appear in the acknowledgments section.

Acknowledgments

Collaborators of the study, i.e., people who made significant contributions to the article, including participants in clinical trials, are acknowledged. It should be mentioned specifically who and what type of cooperation in the investigation was carried out. The contributors mentioned in this section should give in writing authorization for the publication of their names.

Examples to be included in Acknowledgements: people who collaborated only giving technical help, collaboration in the drafting of the manuscript, the heads of departments whose participation was of a general nature.

Declaration of conflicts of interest

Authors submitting articles to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina should declare any personal or commercial relation that may present bias and therefore a conflict of interest in connection with the submitted article. Conflicts of interest may be direct or indirect, including financial interest of the authors by the company that sponsors the study as well as jobs, grants, payment of per diem, travel, consultancies, etc.

If the author has shares in the company or employee thereof either full-time or part-time, it should be indicated in the Declaration of conflicts of interest. Failure to do so may result in sanctions.

Announcing the sources of financial support of the study does not imply a conflict of interest.

Declaration of assignment of copyright

Authors submitting articles to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina at the time of sending the sworn statement of authorship and permission for publication of the article, give up their patrimonial rights to the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima-Peru for releasing the article on the conditions, procedures and means available. The authors will not receive royalties or compensation on the part of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos by the publication of articles in Anales de la Facultad de Medicina.

Permissions for the publication or dissemination of the contents of Anales de la Facultad de Medicina

Under the aegis of the regulations, all rights are reserved by the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. The diffusion of the contents of Anales de la Facultad de Medicina (text, tables, figures) are authorized provided you cite the source. For authorizing the reprint of a number of Anales de la Facultad de Medicina refer to the direction of the Journal. Anales de la Facultad de Medicina has legal deposit and is freely distributed to researchers and professors of the Faculty of Medicine of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, general practitioners, universities and scientific and academic institutions. Checklist of items sent to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina

Checklist of items sent to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina must be completed in its entirety by the author to see that the article meets the requirements for publication. The checklist, the article to be published and the sworn statement of authorship are sent via e-mail. If an article does not apply to some of the items of the checklist, the box is left unchecked. If the checklist is not submitted, the publishing process cannot continue.

Peer review

Review by peers or arbitration is a method used to ensure the quality, originality, feasibility and scientific rigor of an article of research. Peer review is a process that is mandatory for all types of articles submitted to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina except for editorials and letters to the Editor that are evaluated by the Editorial Committee.

Papers submitted to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina are evaluated by reviewers with experience and knowledge of the subject referred in the article to assess, with the slogan that their concept achieve good judgment and high quality for publication. The requirements to be a reviewer of Anales de la Facultad de Medicina are: knowledge of the topic, impartiality, academy, innovation, responsibility. Reviewers selected for Anales de la Facultad de Medicina are not remunerated but they are mentioned in the printed volume where they contributed. When required by the article, there are reviewers experts in the fields of biostatistics and epidemiology. The authors of articles should not suggest reviewers, since this constitutes a conflict of interest.

Papers submitted to Anales de la Facultad de Medicina will be initially evaluated by the Editorial Committee according to the requirements, and subsequently shall be subject to arbitration by pairs, for which the Editorial Committee invites 3 reviewers per article, who anonymously and in a period of 15 days will qualify the article through a report. The type of review is double blind. Referees or reviewers issue suggestions and recommendations on how to improve the article. The evaluation of referees consider the article:

  • Suitable for publication without changes

  • Suitable for publication with minor changes

  • Suitable for publication with major changes

  • Not suitable for publication.

Once received the suggestions and recommendations, these are sent to the author who is given 15 days to submit the modified article. No article will be accepted definitively until all of the corrections have been clarified and modified. To facilitate the task of the Editorial Committee, when the authors send a manuscript previously evaluated, they must enclose a letter where they expose modifications carried out (section, page, line) and, where necessary, divergent points of view. Depending on the case, Anales de la Facultad de Medicina may resubmit the corrected article to the reviewers before considering its publication. If the corrections were not sent until a period of six months, the article will be rejected for publication. Anales de la Facultad de Medicina reserves the right to make changes or amendments to the article for the sake of a better understanding, unless these changes modify its content. The corresponding author will finally check the pdf before final publication. Reviewers may suggest the original article to be published as short communication or letter to the editor.

The average time of the editorial process from receipt of the item until the decision of the Editorial Committee publishing the same, having passed the review process by pairs and corrections, varies between 2 and 4 months. The author may request information on the progress of the review of the article as well as the stage of the publishing process in which the article is.

Galley proofs

It is a stage of the publishing process to the layout and editing of the article to be published. A galley proof of the article will be sent to the author in PDF format. The proof will be carefully reviewed and marked the possible errors, returning the proof corrected within a period of 48 hours. Changes to the content of the article will not be accepted. The Editorial Committee reserves the right to admit or not the corrections made by the author in the galley proofs. If authors do not print proof observations, the Editorial Committee will consider the final version accepted.

In electronic format, through the OJS platform, Anales de la Facultad de Medicina uses the LOCKSS system to create a permanent storage system for the journal for conservation and restoration purposes.

Anales de la Facultad de Medicina allows, under the Creative Commons license, to use the contents of the journal without requesting permission from the author, preserving intellectual property. Anales de la Facultad de Medicina ensures the intellectual content of electronic archival documents for long periods of time, maintaining their attributes such as integrity, authenticity, inalterability, originality, reliability and accessibility.
