La primera causa de mortalidad en el mundo es la enfermedad cardiovascular, y la hipertensión arterial es motivo principal de esta enfermedad (1). En el Perú, el estudio Tornasol encontró que la prevalencia en el Perú en mayores de 18 años de ambos sexos era 23,7%, en 2006 (2), porcentaje que aumentó a 27,3% en 2011 (3), con excepción de las ciudades ubicadas sobre los 3 000 metros de altura. La mayor parte de los hipertensos estaban en la costa y luego en la selva. Había más hipertensión en los varones hasta los 55 años y luego las mujeres igualaban a los hombres, para después desplazarlos hacia los 70 años (57,1% mujeres, 50,8% varones). Lo más dramático del problema es recordar que la mayor parte de la población no conoce que puede estar sufriendo de hipertensión arterial o, si se está tratando, no cumple con sus indicaciones terapéuticas. Y que, a falta del medicamento único ideal, se utiliza combinación de al menos dos medicamentos, y los consensos sobre tratamiento varían continuamente (4).Downloads
