Iniciamos el primer número del año 2011 con trabajos de investigación experimentales, así como de medidas preventivas y de costos en salud. Dos artículos del primer grupo se refieren a la maca, el primero, a la Disminucion del daño oxidativo y efecto hipoglicemiante de la maca (Lepidium meyenii Walp) en ratas con diabetes inducida por streptozotocina, que obtuvo el Premio al Mejor Trabajo en Ciencias Básicas de las IX Jornadas Científicas Sanfernandinas de la Facultad de Medicina, así como Premio al Mejor trabajo del Docente menor de 40 años, de la Asociación de Exalumnos Sanfernandinos de la Peruvian American Medical Society–PAMS, en setiembre 2010. La maca se cultiva exclusivamente en los Andes Peruanos del Centro, a una altitud de 4 000 a 4 500 m sobre el nivel del mar, y en las últimas décadas ha merecido un reconocimiento universal por algunas propiedades. Así, es sumamente conocida como elemento alimenticio y de la medicina tradicional peruana. Se le ha asignado resultados beneficiosos en la fertilidad (1), disfunción sexual (2,3), disfunción eréctil (4), reducción del tamaño de la próstata (5), bienestar, memoria (6), entre otros, aunque la evidencia es limitada (7).Downloads
