En la actualidad existen diversos aspectos acerca de la fisiología y patología del hombre de altura, los cuales todavía no han sido totalmente esclarecidos. En esta oportunidad se presenta tres trabajos referentes al tema. Los dos primeros han evaluado la respuesta hipofisaria al estimulo con hormonas hipotalámicas sintéticas (TRH y GnRH) administradas tanto en forma de bolo como en forma pulsátil, utilizando una bomba de infusión. Los resultados obtenidos luego de estas estimulaciones nos muestran respuestas inéditas hipofisarias y nos permiten ampliar el conocimiento sobre el efecto de la altura en condiciones de hipoxia crónica. Ambos estudios han sido realizados en la década de los 80, en nativos de altura, tales como en Tarma (3 000 m.s.n.m) y Cerro de Pasco (4 200 m.s.n.m) y Cusco (3 395 m.s.n.m). Un tercer trabajo, que utiliza dos marcadores genéticos (mtDNA y MBL) trata de ayudarnos a entender cómo se ha producido el origen de nuestra población peruana.
