El 5 de octubre de cada año se celebra en el Perú el día del médico. Dicha fecha conmemora la muerte de Daniel Alcides Carrión quien fue declarado héroe de la medicina peruana tras inocularse sangre de un paciente con «Fiebre de la Oroya», presentar la sintomatología, autodescribir su historia clínica y finalmente fallecer. Con este hecho iniciaron las primeras investigaciones en la enfermedad que hoy lleva su nombre (1).
