En el mes de diciembre del 2019 en la ciudad de Wuhan (China) fueron reportados casos de neumonía atípica provocados por un nuevo coronavirus, al cual se le denominó SARS-CoV-2, y es el causante de la enfermedad COVID-19 (1). A causa de su rápida propagación por todo el mundo e incremento del número de muertes, la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) la declaró pandemia en el mes de marzo del 2020 (2). Desde entonces, fueron reportados hasta octubre del 2022, un total de 6 564 556 muertes y 626 090 018 contagios a nivel mundial (3). Frente a este contexto adverso y preocupante, la investigación y su producción científica fue primordial para la generación de evidencias y la toma decisiones de las autoridades competentes.
