The importance of detecting the SARS-CoV-2 virus by means of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test in undergraduate students of health sciences

Recientemente hemos leído con gran interés el artículo titulado “Seroprevalencia de la infección por el virus SARS-CoV-2 en estudiantes de pregrado de ciencias de la salud de una universidad pública” de Lucy López Reyes y col. donde mencionan la necesidad de implementar medidas de bioseguridad, educación, prevención y control antes del retorno a la presencialidad, para así proteger a la población de estudiantes, utilizando como parámetros de selección: detección de anticuerpo con prueba rápida (Kit Cellex Qsars-CoV-2 IgG/IgM Rapid Test) y test inmunoensayo cromatográfico de flujo lateral, el cual, según el resultado de la prueba serológica de anticuerpos contra el SARS-CoV-2, 67,1% de los que dieron positivo no tenían diagnóstico de COVID-19, 93,9% dieron positivo pero no tuvieron sintomas, y finalmente 40,2% no tuvieron contacto con algún sospechoso de COVID-19 pero salieron positivos (1). Sin embargo, los autores no consideraron realizar pruebas de PCR de rutina en los estudiantes; así, evidenciaron que el 34,58% de los estudiantes de medicina tuvieron resultado positivo, siendo la población con la más alta seropositividad. Otro estudio realizado en estudiantes de medicina de los tres primeros años, quienes asistieron a clases presenciales, a las cuales se les realizó un seguimiento con PCR, evidenció que solo un 6% presentó seropositividad al inicio de la presencialidad. Las pruebas rápidas son complementarias para descarte, pero no sustituyen la detección del material genético viral por RT-PCR (2).
