Outbreak of human rabies due to vampire virus (Desmodus rotundus) associated with cat bites in the department of Amazonas, Peru, 2024

La rabia es una zoonosis viral cuyo agente causal es el virus de la rabia (VR), especie Lyssavirus, familia Rhabdoviridae, tiene una distribución mundial y afecta a un amplio rango de especies ma- míferos (1). En el Perú, la enfermedad se clasifica en dos formas epidemiológicas: urbana y silvestre. La primera tiene como reservorio al perro y la segunda al murciélago (2). Entre los años 1975 y 2013 se notificó el fallecimiento de 160 personas a causa de rabia silvestre en el departamento de Ama- zonas. En razón a esta situación el año 2011 se implementó la vacunación pre-exposición contra la rabia que contribuyó a reducir la elevada mortalidad en las comunidades nativas locales (3). Sin embargo, se ha reportado un aumento de casos de rabia silvestre animal en el departamento de Amazonas entre 2020 y 2023 (11, 24, 29 y 51 brotes, respectivamente) (4).
