Abstract

Introduction: Violence against women in Peru has been recognized as a serious social and public health problem that leads to the death of the victim. Objective: To determine the association between the characteristics of the people interviewed and the level of social tolerance towards domestic violence against women based on data from the National Survey of Social Relations (ENARES) in Peru, 2019. Material and methods: The National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) developed the index of social tolerance towards violence against women (ITSm) valued from 0 to 100 points, based on a definition that includes habits, attitudes, perceptions and cultural practices related to violence against women. The sample was 1026 people aged 18 and over of both sexes. Results: 50.6% have a high level of tolerance towards domestic violence against women. It is higher in men (52.2%); in those with a lower level of primary education or no level (81.0%); married or cohabiting women (56.8%); those who live in overcrowded conditions (56.9%). In those whose main occupation is independent or self-employed (61.2%). When calculating the crude and adjusted prevalence ratios, a statistically significant association was found (p<0.001) with all the study variables selected in both the bivariate and multivariate analysis. Conclusions: The ITSm is associated with multiple variables shaped by socio-demographic, work, autonomy characteristics and their membership in the health system.
