Abstract

Since 1866 it is known by the term "splenic anemia" A condition characterized by anemia with splenomegaly and it was not accompanied by leukemia; in the year 1894 Banti described a syndrome characterized by anemia, splenomegaly, and concomitant liver cirrhosis and it was not caused by malaria, syphilis and other infectious diseases and tried to establish the clinical and histologic criteria to differentiate this disease. Since then much has been written and published about this picture in which the spleen seems to have the main role.
