Metonymies in legal language: a cognitive linguistic study of sentences of the Peruvian Constitutional Court

This research highlights the importance and function of metonymy in Peruvian legal language. In that sense, the objective is to describe and classify the metonymic expressions found in habeas corpus sentences issued by the Peruvian Constitutional Court. For this purpose, 10 judgements issued in 2018 and 2019 were analyzed; a sample of 31 metonymic expressions was obtained which were classified and analyzed under the approach of Lakoff and Johnson's Cognitive Linguistics (1980). The resources used for the analysis were a series of specialized dictionaries and normative documents. The article concludes that depersonalization is a resource through which metonymies avoid signaling the explicit presence of judges when issuing judgements; likewise, the study of metonymies in Peruvian legal language shows that it can be understood from the Cognitive Linguistics approach.
