Abstract

The Huallaga River basin was occupied from time immemorial by numerous indigenous nations that constituted an ethnolinguistic mosaic. In the 16th century, the first missionaries to enter the area reported the existence of some 30 different languages, "all of them very rough", and that "the Huallaga had only a small Babel left" in terms of number and linguistic differences.
