Abstract

This paper offers some reflections on two issues. Firstly, it discusses what the capitalist crisis of civilization is, by proposing some details on the economic dimension of crisis and its main triggers, and on the environmental and the multiple – implicit and explicit – violence dimensions of crisis associated with the capitalist expansion. After providing a global vision of the capitalist civilizational crisis, the article explores some possible alternatives that help the construction of “other economies”, giving particular emphasis to the proposals that come from social and solidarity economy, the economy of community, the civil economy. As a concrete example of an alternative – and encouraging – economic organization, that has survived in the midst of capitalist development, some details are presented about the progress of the co-operative movement. These experiences reflect one of the many reorganizations - and revolutions - that are urgent to prevent the capitalist expansion, and the increasing commodification of life that it causes, leading us to a true dystopia.
