Aunque se han publicado libros de crítica literaria, ensayos, perfiles y entrevistas sobre Julio Ramón Ribeyro, nadie había trabajado el relato biográfico del autor de La palabra del mudo. El periodista e investigador Jorge Coaguila cubrió este enorme vació con la publicación de Ribeyro, una vida. De hecho, este biógrafo, bautizado por el Flaco como “su crítico y biógrafo oficial”, acumula algunos proyectos ribeyrianos —Ribeyro, la palabra inmortal (1995), Las respuestas del mudo (1998) y Julio Ramón Ribeyro: penúltimo dossier (2009, en coautoría con Néstor Tenorio Requejo)— y le ha dedicado, en 2017, su tesis de maestría titulada Ideología política en la correspondencia de Julio Ramón Ribeyro con su hermano Juan Antonio (1953-1983).
