Poetics and politics in the Viceroyalty of Peru (17th century): Diego de Ávalos y Figueroa y el poder de la poesía en la Primera parte de la Miscelánea Austral (1602)

This academic article argues that the poetics of Diego de Ávalos y Figuera legitimizes the defense of the power of poetry. It is emphasized that this poetics does not arise in isolation, but feeds on the dialogue with the Greek tradition and Italian humanism, predominating in it a Horacian tendency. It also emphasizes that the political power of poetry is manifested in four specific contexts: fame, civic life, historical storytelling and national identity. The subjective nature of the poetic activity is also emphasized, since it responds mainly to the particular interests of the author. Thus, the present study aims to identify and analyze the passages of the Colloquiums XII and XIII of the First Part of the Southern Miscelánea (1602), which allow to reconstruct the poetic conception and the political power of poetry, Thus reinforcing the main argument put forward. It also seeks to contribute to the research of the history of aesthetic ideas and poetic thought of the seventeenth century in the Viceroyalty of Peru.
