Abstract

Language was one of the most important elements of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. It is through language that the cultural schemes of these human groups have been translated. Through it, the relationship with other ethnic groups was established, "generating policies of coexistence within this plurality" (Bonfil,93), however, this has been one of the instruments most used during the colonial period to homogenize. In the case of indigenous languages, it is important to note the significance of the use of Spanish as a unifying language, which has sought to establish itself as the common language of the Spanish-speaking peoples of Latin America.
