Abstract

No previous research has been conducted to account for the etymology of theonym Chayahuita «Cumpanamá». Its complex morphological reality (Kanpunama'/ Kwanpwa'-Nama')2 and the possible Aymara origin of the compositional head nama', are of great interest not only to the Amazonian linguistics, but also to the Andean linguistics, whenever we assume the possible existence of a northern Aymara linked to Chavin close to the Upper Amazon. By applying updated linguistic analysis and taking advantage of the archaeological research conducted in the Andean region relatively close to the area in question, we will try to decipher what this largely ignored lexeme offers for the newly born discipline known as Cahuapana linguistics.
