The process of change and innovations in a spelling system is usually based on two kinds of considerations: a) pragmatic, aimed at facilitating the learning of writing and spelling without implying an effort by the users; b) theoretical, to ensure a better adaptation of the system to the theoretical principles underlying it.
In this paper, we assume that the changes in the spelling of the Spanish language of the RAE (2010), precisely with respect to the graphemic system, only pursue a theoretical, academic goal: to adjust, even more, to the ideal phonemic principle behind it. This proposes a quantitative parallelism between the phonological and graphemic levels. Although this does not mean, necessarily, a greater accessibility and better control of the writing system of the Spanish language by its users.
