Abstract

The colossal critical bibliography on Mario Vargas Llosa is scattered in different languages into which his literary work has been translated; however, this critical corpus is primarily focused on examining his narrative and to a lesser extent his dramatic work; we could even affirm that there is a critical canon concentrated in José Miguel Oviedo's book, Mario Vargas Llosa: la invención de una realidad (three expanded editions 1970, 1977 and 1981) and Efraín Kristal's voluminous work La tentación de la palabra. However, the valuable literary essays of the author of The City and the Dogs, although they had the attention of academic critics, did not boast a systematic study until the recent appearance of the book La representación de la literatura en la ensayística de Mario Vargas Llosa (2019) written by Javier Morales, professor and researcher at the Department of Literature of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos.
