Abstract

The novel centers its narrative axis on the figure of Alejandrino Montesinos, better known as "Alancho" who leads, together with his brothers Aurelio (Aulico) and Luis (Chucho), the resistance against the government forces. In this aspect of the novel, perhaps the most important, we see a contrast between the centralist regime represented by the forces of order headed by the persistent Guzmán Marquina and the provincial power represented by the Montesinos. These will fight against the centralist power, but not to subvert its structure, but to be made visible by it. In this way, they cover up their own interests and transform the struggle for their interests into a social struggle, a struggle for the vindication of the province and the peasantry. This masking, in effect, is a success because they gain followers among the mass of peasants of their hacienda and the surrounding haciendas and communities.
