Las cartas como documento histórico han sido consultadas como fuente de primera mano en diferentes investigaciones humanísticas y sociales. Sin embargo, no fue sino hasta fines del siglo xx que investigadores de diferentes disciplinas reflexionaron sobre los aspectos metodológicos de su uso como fuente. Asimismo, en aquella época, se amplió el interés por el análisis de quienes las producían. El estudio de las epístolas no se limitó a aquellas escritas por políticos o escritores representativos, sino que también se mostró interés por aquellas elaboradas por las clases populares y sus intelectuales.
