The representation of music, song and the ritual act in the short narrative of José María Arguedas

The first literary productions of José María Arguedas were not originally studied in the initial reception of his narrative work. After the publication of the story “Water”, studies on his work appear in different newspapers of the time. The production stage of Arguedas’ short stories should be understood as the greatest moment of exploration and definition of his own narrative style. The purpose of this article is to analyze the first three stories published in this first stage: “Los comuneros de Ak’ola” (1934), “Los comuneros de Utej Pampa” (1934) and “K’ellk’atay-pampa” (1934). In them, music, song and dance act as structuring and configuring elements of collective characters that represent ritualized acts of Andean culture. Both the short story and the novel allowed Arguedas to fulfill his literary, artistic, social, and cultural goals.
