In this work I analyze the articles that José María Arguedas published in La Prensa (1938-1948) of Buenos Aires. My objective is to identify the particularities of Indian and mestizo representations in Arguedian writing. From here, I intend to understand the idea that the Peruvian writer conceives about Andean popular culture. Arguedas describes Andean expressions as complex manifestations that confront two cultural horizons: the Indian and the mestizo. He affirmed that his texts emphasize the figure of the Indian, with the purpose of assuring that it is there where the original and authentic values of the Andean culture reside. I also declare that the image of the mestizo is problematic since it can be understood as a negative irruption, but also as a presence of cultural resistance. To this end, I have chosen to reflect on the set of texts published by Arguedas in La Prensa.
