A decolonial interpretation around the topic of the representation of the idea of “race” in José Santos Chocano’s Alma America (1906)

The paper at hand analyzes the idea of “race” portrayed in Alma America (1906) by Jose Santos Chocano, with the objective of identifying the ideological speech underneath his particular configuration of the concept. Thus, two poems were broken down: “Ciudad conquistada” and “El derrumbamiento”, since they offer a precise structure on how the “race” of the Indians is built and the one of the Spaniards, both the two great players who come forward in this poetry collection. Moreover, the ideas constructed by the speaker about “race” and colonialism are brought into question in regards of its political aspect as well as culture’s; through the decolonial lens sociologist Aníbal Quijano looks from.
