Abstract

Tillie Olsen was a renowned American writer, awarded the O. Henry Prize in 1961 for her first published work, Tell me a Riddle, at the age of 49. Despite the late edition of her first writing and the small number of books she managed to publish, her work has been rescued in 2022 by the publishing house Las afueras. The text in question is Silencios, translated by Blanca Gago, who brings this work to the Spanish-speaking public for the first time; in addition, the book is accompanied by an extensive prologue in which Marta Sanz reflects on the development of the figure of the writer and her position in the literary world based on her own experience as an author. Silencios is based on two conferences: "Silencios" from 1962 and "Una de doce: mujeres y escritoras en el siglo xx" from 1971. The relevance of this reprint is based both on its being the first in the Spanish language and on its positioning as part of a corpus that broadens the course of studies on literature written by women and working-class creators.
