El premio nobel de literatura Mario Vargas Llosa (Arequipa, 1936) nos entrega su última novela de título nerudiano Le dedico mi silencio, en la que se aborda una utopía cultural: el vals criollo como mezcla final, y superación positiva y feliz de todas las diferencias culturales que ha venido arrastrando el país, y que viene siendo discutida por la élite cultural limeña desde hace décadas. Si bien la intención es noble, la idea en sí misma se va tornando, hasta cierto punto, ingenua y anacrónica. Una digresión editorial: la imagen de Los músicos (1979), del colombiano Fernando Botero, como portada del libro no tiene mucho que ver con el tema tratado, ya que las escenas de este cuadro están más cerca de una big band de jazz. Más acorde hubiese sido usar Marinera con cajón (1938), de Camilo Blas; o, incluso, Jarana en Chorrillos (c.1857), de Ignacio Merino, imágenes peruanas que ambientan mucho mejor lo criollo.
