This article makes a comparative study of the use of animal nouns (masculine and feminine) in a selection of 14 poems from the books El quejido del perro en su existencia (1995), Como el sol (1998), and Del dobladillo de mi ropa (2008), by the Mayan poet Briceida Cuevas Cob, to show if there is a difference in the connotation of the noun when its inflection is presented in feminine. The hypothesis is that the connotation in the feminine case expands to the structural metaphor WOMEN ARE ANIMALS, and to negative stereotypes about women. The data from the corpus of verses mentioning zoonyms in masculine and feminine were systematized in tables to show that, indeed, the connotation of animal nouns in feminine is used in the poems to insult or to disapprove socially policed behaviors in women.
