The role of nature in poetry

This theoretical article explores the multiple representations of nature in poetry, addressing its evolution from archaic worldviews that conceive it as sacred to contemporary perspectives of ecocriticism. Five main approaches are analyzed: nature as an expression of the divine, its materialistic objectification in modernity, its role as a spiritual guide, its psychoanalytic dimension through Bachelard’s material imagination, and its ethical agency within the framework of ecological criticism. Throughout the text, it is argued that poetry, in dialogue with nature, transcends the aesthetic to pose philosophical, spiritual, and socio-environmental questions, highlighting the interdependence between the human and the non-human and emphasizing the need for a new ecosystemic ethos.
