The presence of Japanese culture in Peru has been evident since the end of the 19th century, however its study has been neglected in the academic field. This research proposes to reconstruct and analyze its influence in the cultural and artistic context of Lima at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, through the study of the first thesis on Japanese art supported in Peru in 1894, as well as the Japonism present in the press media, visual arts and collecting. With this framework, the influence of Japanese art, especially prints, in the configuration of the visual rhetoric of the graphic artist Julio Málaga Grenet, in his first stage of training in Lima, will be demonstrated and analyzed. The research will be carried out through the historical-cultural approach and the formal analysis of art history.
