Desarraigo, podría ser el tema que atraviesa esta novela del reconocido escritor nacido en Fez, Ben Jelloum. Constituida como un imponente fresco de un inmigrante marroquí en la vieja metrópoli, esta novela va recorriendo palmo a palmo, la desazón y desencanto del sueño europeo vivida acaso por cientos o miles de inmigrantes que cruzando el mar, llegan en pos de aquellos valores supuestamente incorporados a la modernidad: prosperidad, ahorro, hijos en la nueva tierra y el reconocimiento de su identidad cultural en medio de la diáspora.
