The purpose of this work is to identify the role of the royalist caudillos, based on the cases of Chile and Peru between 1819 and 1824, a period in which both countries lived guerillas or montoneras, acting simultaneously under similar contexts within the independence process of the cone south. We argue that, after a position of enclosure, the royalist caudillos of the southern cone exercised a similar role of resistance as articulating figures of various popular groups, from where they incited disorder and sabotage, differentiating themselves from the figure of the patriot caudillo as a container of social order. Through an analysis of primary sources the article compares the actions in both geographic political units, identifying common factors in the period studied.
