The onomastic landscape is a variation of linguistic landscape (Landry & Bourhis, 1997), and this a consequence of the landscape studies from the point of view of geography and urbanism. It focuses on the presence of proper names in certain public spaces whose function is to identify, publicize, and commemorate. In the sense that the linguistic landscape represents specific places in the geographical environment, the present paper is based on the commemorative function of toponyms from Azaryahu’s (2012a, 2012b), Rose-Redwood et al.’s (2018), Rose-Redwood & Sun-Bae’s (2020) and Alderman’s (2020) point of view as a way to legitimate a political context. With this concept clearly defined, the objective of this paper is to study a set of 309 school names, known as urbanonyms, constructed by searching in the database of the State of Mexico’s Secretaría de Educación Pública, which stores the names of schools in each municipality. A discussion of the preliminary results concerning the lexical and onomastic is outlined, and also, there is a discussion about how the naming processes of schools reveals an overview of national and local history and culture, specially the one related to the Revolution era and modern Mexico.
