Abstract

Although the history of the orthographic configuration of Spanish already has classic works from the historiographic point of view (Rosenblat, 1951; Esteve Serrano, 1977; Martínez Alcalde, 2010; among others), the truth is that the inability of this perspective to answer all the questions raised by the study of a subject as relevant and complex as this one has determined the emergence of different complementary approaches that address the process from other perspectives such as the textual (Almeida Cabrejas, 2014; Ramírez Luengo, 2020).

Author Biography

  • José Luis Ramírez Luengo, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Madrid, España

    D. in Hispanic Philology from the University of Deusto (Spain), and currently works at the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain); he has also researched and taught at the University of Jaén, the University of Alcalá (Spain) and the Autonomous University of Querétaro (Mexico). He is also a corresponding member in Madrid of the Academia Mexicana de la Lengua, the Academia Hondureña de la Lengua and the Academia Guatemalteca de la Lengua, as well as an honorary member of the Academia Ecuatoriana de la Lengua. His main field of research is the history of the Spanish language in America, the linguistic contact of Spanish with Portuguese from a historical point of view and the configuration of modern orthography; he has published almost two hundred works on these subjects.
