About the Journal

Focus and Scope

The REVISTA PERUANA DE BIOLOGIA is a peer reviewed scientific journal, published by Instituto de Investigaciones de Ciencias Biológicas Antonio Raimondi, Facultad de Ciencias Biológicas, Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Perú. It is publish on line and printed form in February, May, August, November.

The REVISTA PERUANA DE BIOLOGIA publishes original research articles of outstanding scientific significance and relevance on topics of biodiversity, biotechnology, ecology, environmental management and biomedicine. The works may be submitted in English or Spanish. The articles will be reviewed by referees according to international standards of quality, creativity, originality and contribution to knowledge.

Peer Review Process

The articles published by the Revista Peruana de Biologia will be submitted to an evaluation process:

  1. Admission: Manuscripts are receipt and evaluated in the first instance by the Editorial Team who will review the compliance with the Guidelines for the presentation of the works and the examination with plagiarism checking software. The works that do not comply with some of the requirements will not be accepted. This proccess take 15 days.
  2. Peer review: The admitted works will be submitted to an evaluation by anonymous reviewers (peer review). The reviewers will be selected for their expertise and knowledge on theme of the work submited. The reviewer is asked to evaluate according to international quality criteria for scientific publications. The reviewers will have the following characteristics: knowledge of the subject, not having competition problems, having recognition as a researcher and academic, responsibility and discretion in the evaluation. The reviewers will be informed about recommendations of ethics and good editioral practices that the Editorial Committee expects. The selected reviewers do not receive remuneration. The authors of the articles may suggest reviewers in their cover letter, when work si submited; Editorial Committee reserves the right to select the reviewers. The type of review is simple ie the reviewer remains anonymous.
  3. Evaluation: The reviewers suggest and recommendations on how to improve the article. The evaluation qualifies the manuscripts as:
  • Publication without changes
  • Publication with minor changes
  • Publication with major changes
  • Rejected
  • Suggestion for its publishes in other magazine
  1. Acceptance and ARTICLE IN PRESS. The work has the status of ACCEPTED when the review process has finished and the author has made all the corrections and modifications indicated. Accepted work is sent to style correction and layout. One proof galley version will be sent to the author for it to be reviewed and returned with a letter of agreement and permission for its publication. If another proof is necesary, author can ask for it. When the Director of the journal has the documentation that will allow him to publish the work, then the work will be considered ARTICLE IN PRESS.

The Revista Peruana de Biología is posted on: February, May, August and November.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

Integrity of the author, authorship, plagiarism, fight against plagiarism and misconduct

Integrity of the author. The Revista Peruana de Biologia adheres to the Responsible research publication: international standards for authors [Kleinert S & Wager E (2011) Responsible research publication: international standards for authors. In summary:

  • The research being reported should have been conducted in an ethical and responsible manner and should comply with all relevant legislation.
  • Researchers should present their results clearly, honestly, and without fabrication, falsification or inappropriate data manipulation.
  • Researchers should strive to describe their methods clearly and unambiguously so that their findings can be confirmed by others.
  • Researchers should adhere to publication requirements that submitted work is original, is not plagiarised, and has not been published elsewhere.
  • Authors should take collective responsibility for submitted and published work.
  • The authorship of research publications should accurately reflect individuals’ contributions to the work and its reporting.
  • Funding sources and relevant conflicts of interest should be disclosed.

Authorship. The Peruvian Journal of Biology adheres to the definition of the author of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors ( ICMJE ) and considers that to be an author of the work you must have the following conditions :

  1. Have provided substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis or interpretation of data for the job; And
  2. Have participated in the writing of the work or critical review and have given an important intellectual contribution to the content of the manuscript; And
  3. Must have approved the final version to be published; And
  4. Assume responsibility in all aspects of the work to ensure that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are investigated and resolved in an appropriate manner. 

Plagiarism. The Revista Peruana de Biologia considers plagiarism as fraud in publication and dishonest behavior, and this is defined as the appropriation of ideas, processes, results or texts of another person without give the corresponding credit.

In addition, as frauds and misconduct are also understood the manufacture (invention of data or results), and falsification (manipulation of research materials, equipment, processes to alter the data or results, as well as the change or omission of data or results).

The Peruvian Journal of Biology does not tolerate plagiarism, fraud or misconduct, which establishes mechanisms to prevent and remedy it:

During the pro editorial review, the Peruvian Journal of Biology avoids the publication of plagiarism, fraud and misconduct using the opinion of peer reviewers and the revision of texts using anti-plagiarism software as computer tools to detect it. The Revista Peruana de Biologia is  Similarity Check participant powered by Ithenticate.
If the Peruvian Journal of Biology detects or is alerted and confirms cases of plagiarism, fraud or misconduct in a published article, the Editorial Committee will proceed according to the guidelines and recommendations of the Committee on Publication Ethics, actions that could lead to the retraction of the article. ( COPE - http://publicationethics.org/ ) may execute the retraction of the article.

Journal History

The Revista Peruana de Biología was published in its beginnings in 1974, by the Asociación de Biólogos de la Universidad de San Marcos. From 1974 to 1994 were published a total of 4 volumes and 6 numbers. The major drawback for its publishing and continuation was the absence of economic resources. Since 1998, the Journal was ceded by the Asociación of the Faculty of Biological Sciences, becoming the journal for its scientific publications. Thenceforth, the Journal has been edited continuously and uninterrupted.
