This article aims to reflect on the theoretical framework for understanding of participation through a gender approach. This approach involves questioning the methodological processes through which participation is conducted in a community context where women truly play a central role. To this end, it is crucial to begin by analyzing to which extent the concept of participation responds to the current social dynamics, especially in a scenario where the democratic status is so feeble. Therefore, participation must also be interpreted from the perspective of grassroots communities and the gender issues associated with it. In recent years, several participatory initiatives have been implemented, presented as led by women or addressing problems that primarily affect women. However, it is necessary to ask how much these initiatives question the power dynamics inherent in the very process of participation. For this reason, it is also critical to review the methodological guides to ensure horizontality and identify elements to dismantle the latent patriarchal relations that hinder the creation of a participatory horizon where the voices of women are heard and valued in all their strength.
