Abstract

This article examines, through user experience, two XML JATS markup tools for scientific articles: SciELO Markup and Marcalyc from Redalyc. The objective is to show the differences or similarities between each of these technological developments. This is achieved through a comparative analysis that focuses on four key points: 1) conception of  the tool,  2) applied methodology, 3) communities or organizations that use it, and 4) implications. The analysis concludes that the markup task is influenced by technological tools that adhere to different science logics and models of communication. The study contribution lies in uncovering the importance of preserving XML JATS as a standard and interoperable language that facilitates dialogue among information systems, by reducing the effort and editorial work for scientific journals in the Latin American region.
