This article revisits a lecture presented at the Primer Encuentro de Tradición Angola-Congo in Ilhéus, organized by the Matamba Tombenci Neto Cultural Association, the Organization for Culture and Citizenship Gongombira, and the Dilazenze Cultural Group on November 17, 2006, at the Terreiro of Matamba Tombenci Neto in the city of Ilhéus, Bahia, in the southern region of Brazil's Northeast. The article aims to illustrate the futility of the debate between "tradition" and "innovation," using as an empirical case study the dynamic creative processes in Candomblé. A religion of African origin that has persisted for nearly two centuries, and that clearly exemplifies how the endurance of its traditions is tied to its remarkable capacity for creativity and adaptation.
