Nigeria se caracteriza por episodios de crecimiento irregular, es dependiente de los ingresos de las exportaciones de petróleo, tiene graves disparidades regionales y el factor político es importante en las decisiones estatales que han originado y profundizado el reto de diversificación económica. Esta problemática ha llevado a diversos investigadores a realizar diversas críticas y recomendaciones relativas a la situación descrita.
